It is also my priority to support both local and international art and art organizations. A History In college, I had a difficult time trying to decide what I wanted to major in. It seemed I did decent in most areas I chose to study, but I was happiest studying art. People would tell me, "Don't major in art. There is no money in it. You'll be a starving artist." As much as I wanted to be successful and make a lot of money like everybody else, I decided to take the road less traveled and do what I really loved - to create art. My goal was to do what made me happy, regardless of any financial hardships. Who's to say that I couldn't be a successful artist? Someone has to make it, so I forged ahead and found sculpture to be a strong interest of mine. My classmates, struggling to create something they liked, would ask me how to sculpt. I would tell them to relax and don't think so much. There are no boundaries, no rules. Let your emotions run wild. Sculpt from deep within yourself. Forget about all the calculus classes and all the analytical things you've learned. They clutter the imagination. In art, anything goes. There are no wrong answers. What is art? My definition is something you create that is appealing to the eye, that comes from the heart, soul, and spirit of a person's imagination. Art is a release from the monotonous rules of life.
Business StoriesIn 1990, I decided to start a sculpture supply business. I started selling alabaster to sculptors in the local community. Later on, I branched into selling stone and tools to schools and universities. I'll never forget the earlier years of my business, when I found an area where a golf course was being developed and excavated. In the process, alabaster was coming out of the ground by the ton. I was carrying 50 to 200 pounds of stone for sometimes as far as 100 to 200 yards. The look on the earthmover operator's face was that of bewilderment. Why is this crazy kid carrying around so much stone so far, and what would he want with it? As it turned out, when I brought the stone home, I called a few colleges and got an order for over 1,500 pounds. At that point, I knew that my business would take off, and the hard work was worth it. The business helps support me with the expenses I incur in making my sculptures. It gives other people a chance to learn what I've learned by supplying materials and teaching them how to sculpt. Conclusion For me, sculpture is a spiritual expression of myself that I will continue to enjoy for the rest of my life. Sincerely, Brad Oren President |
